Sweet River Fool: A Novel about Saint Francis of Assisi

“Out of habit, he began to consider the garbage that was in his immediate sight.  There were two empty pizza boxes, some plastic bubble packing, random cans and bottles, and several tightly stuffed trash bags.  From under one of these trash bags the hard blue corner of a book caught and held Snody’s eyes.  He reached over and pulled it out. On its cover was an illustration of a smiling man. He was bearded, had bare feet, and was dressed in patched and threadbare robes with a rope tied around his waist for a belt.  A bird of some kind perched comfortably on the man’s shoulder and a wolf stood at his side as obediently as if it had been a pet.  Snody glanced at the book’s title.  Davidson Christian Series for Young Adult Readers, Vol. 4Saint Francis, The Fool of God.  What an odd thing to call a saint, Snody thought.”

-Sweet River Fool

Sweet River Fool tells the story of an elderly homeless man named Snody (pronounced “Snow-dee”) who begs and scavenges for a living in the small north Georgia town of Sweet River. Despairing over his alcoholism and poverty, Snody tries to take his own life but mercifully botches the attempt. In the wake of this failure, he discovers a children’s book about Saint Francis of Assisi and is captivated by the medieval saint’s life. What fascinates him most is the fact that Francis was able to experience contentment and joy in the midst of complete poverty.  Inspired by admiration for Francis and a desire to understand the mystery behind his joy, Snody begins to model his own life on the saint’s. In the course of doing so, he befriends Clare, a teenage atheist who is drawn to Snody’s simple faith and gentle humor.  By the novel’s end, both Snody and Clare find their lives paralleling that of Francis in ways that they never imagined possible.
